There is no shortage of business coaches. LinkedIn is full of them. Conferences are full of them. And yet, most founders who have worked with a coach will tell you the same thing: it helped, but it didn't stick.

That's not a coincidence. It's a structural problem, and understanding it is the key to knowing what kind of support your business actually needs.

### What a Business Coach Does

A business coach works with you, the owner. You meet on a regular rhythm, and the coach asks good questions, offers frameworks, challenges your thinking, and holds you to the commitments you make in the session.

This has real value. A good coach helps you see blind spots, think more clearly, and stay focused on what matters. For individual leaders who need a thinking partner, coaching can be transformational.

But here's the limitation: a coach usually works with what you tell them. They don't sit with your leadership team. They don't see how your people actually communicate. They don't watch decisions get made or avoided. And when the session ends, you go back to the business with a list of things to implement on your own.

### What an Execution Partner Does

An execution partner works with you and your leadership team, on the real decisions, in the weeks when they are actually being made. Not as an employee and not as an interim manager. As part of your accountability team, from outside the org chart.

The difference is not just who is in the room. It's accountability, context, and continuity.

An execution partner sees what's actually happening, not just what gets reported. They help your team make decisions in real time, not just reflect on them after the fact. They build the structure with your team, not for your team. And they hold everyone to what they committed to, until your people can run it themselves.

### The Implementation Gap

The reason most coaching doesn't produce lasting change isn't the quality of the advice. It's what happens between sessions.

Most leaders leave a coaching session energized and clear. Then they walk back into a full inbox, three urgent problems, and a team that needs direction. The insights from the session get buried under the weight of the day. Two weeks later, they're back in the same patterns.

> *"Coaching alone cannot close the implementation gap. You need someone who holds the whole team to what it committed to, until the habits, the structure and the rhythm stick."*

This is what we call the implementation gap: the space between knowing what to do and actually doing it consistently inside a real organization with real people and real complexity.

### When Coaching Is the Right Answer

To be clear, coaching is not the wrong answer. It's the right answer for the right situation.

If you are an individual leader who needs a thinking partner, a sounding board, and accountability for your own development, coaching is powerful.

If your business needs the way it runs rebuilt, its leadership team aligned, and execution that doesn't depend on you chasing it, you need more than coaching. You need an execution partner.

### The Rechtien Consult Difference

At Rechtien Consult, we don't show up with a framework and a deck. We show up ready to work, with you and your leadership team.

We work on the real decisions, in your leadership meetings and planning sessions, and in the difficult conversations. We help you make decisions, build clear accountability, and set up the rhythm that lets your business execute without depending on any single person, including us.

The goal is not to make you dependent on us. The goal is to build something that runs without us. That's the opposite of what most consulting relationships look like, and it's exactly what most growing businesses need.

If you've tried coaching and found it helpful but not transformational, the missing ingredient wasn't the coach. It was the execution layer: someone who holds you and your team to the work, week after week, until it holds without them.

That's the work we do. If that's the work your business needs, let's talk.

### Frequently Asked Questions

**What is the difference between a business coach and an execution partner?**

A business coach works with you, usually through regular sessions where they ask questions and offer frameworks. An execution partner works with you and your leadership team on the real decisions, holds everyone to what they committed to, and builds the structure with your team, from outside the org chart. A coach helps you think. An execution partner helps you build.

**When should I hire a business coach instead of an execution partner?**

Hire a business coach when you need a thinking partner for your own development as a leader, a sounding board for decisions, or accountability on personal commitments. Coaching is the right answer when the primary work is internal: sharpening your own clarity, confidence, or judgment.

**When does an execution partner make more sense than coaching?**

An execution partner makes more sense when the work is organizational, not individual. If your leadership team needs to be aligned, the way the business runs needs to be rebuilt, or execution keeps depending on you chasing it, you need someone working with the whole team, not just with you. Coaching alone can't close that gap.

**What is the implementation gap?**

The implementation gap is the space between knowing what to do and actually doing it consistently inside a real organization. It's the reason most coaching engagements produce insight but not lasting change: the leader leaves energized, then gets pulled back into daily pressures, and the new habits don't take hold. Closing it takes someone who works with the whole team and holds everyone to the work until it runs without them.

###### Thomas Rechtien

Thomas Rechtien is the founder of Rechtien Consult, a coaching and execution partnership for owner-led manufacturing, construction and industrial businesses. He works as part of the owner's accountability team, from outside the org chart, not as a consultant who delivers a deck and disappears. His work follows the From Stuck to Scaling approach of Clarity, Alignment, Focus and Momentum, so the business runs without everything going through the owner. Before founding Rechtien Consult, Thomas spent more than 20 years in banking, steel and industrial operations in the U.S. and Europe, including as CEO of a $150M+ industrial enterprise. He has led turnarounds, scaled international operations and built high-performing sales organizations. He owns businesses of his own and has exited one. It all started in his grandfather's carpentry shop in Germany. Based in Houston, Texas, Thomas works with owners across the U.S. and Germany.
